Varanasi

The idea that our earthly realm crisscrosses with other realities, that there are gateways in this world that lead to higher realms, runs deep in Indian thought. These “crossing over places” are called Tirthas, and make up the innumerable holy places of India. Varanasi is India’s most sacred Tirtha, where pilgrims have been coming from far and wide since ancient times to witness the great City of Light, to bathe in the holy Ganges River and to take the journey into the Other World. These photos were take in Feb. 2010 during Holi, the festival of color.
